R&D Locations: St. Louis
Pfizer Global Research and Development's St. Louis laboratories is home to 1200 colleagues whose work is focused in the areas of Inflammation and Biologics. Our work in Inflammation concentrates on research into new medicines for the treatment of Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and Inflammatory Pain. St. Louis is also a Global Center of Emphasis of Biologics (large molecule medicines) research and specifically those that target proteins. In addition all biologic medicines developed for initial clinical trials by Pfizer will come through St. Louis.
In recent years St.Louis labs and colleagues are proud to have played a significant role in bringing Celebrex® (for Arthritis), Inspra® (for hypertension and congestive heart failure), Genotropin® and Somavert® (both for hormone disorders) to patients.
Currently the St. Louis labs are based on four campuses (Chesterfield, Maryville, Newstead, and St. Louis) covering a total area of 200 acres and containing 1.2 million square feet of lab space. In 2005 Pfizer began construction on a new $200 million, 330,000 square feet research building, scheduled to be completed in late 2008, that will allow Pfizer to consolidate all research activities in St. Louis to a single campus.
A brief history of Pfizer St. Louis
In April 2000, Pharmacia & Upjohn completed a merger with Monsanto and G.D. Searle, creating Pharmacia. Following the merger, Pharmacia continued Searle's agreement with Pfizer to co-promote Celebrex, which was originally co-developed by Searle and Pfizer. In August 2002, Pharmacia completed the spin-off of its agricultural subsidiary, Monsanto Company. Pfizer's Chesterfield Site officially became a Pfizer site in April 2003, as part of Pfizer's acquisition of Pharmacia. Pfizer Inc and Pharmacia Corporation began operating as a unified company on April 16, 2003, forging one of the world's fastest-growing and most valuable companies.
